Joy in Creativity and Expressions of Love

Today's images were inspired by a book by Page Hodel: Monday Hearts for Madalene. There is also a set of note cards. I first heard about Page and her hearts from a newsletter by Meg Cox. The story about Page's love for Madalene--the tributes to her love for Madalene that she created visually--is so beautiful. It is the spirit of love in physical form.

My daughter and I were preparing to make Valentines today (yes, already!) and I thought about these hearts, and started to explore creating one myself with materials we had around the house. My daughter remarked the other day something about me being a "mom who makes water balloons" so I got some of those out. And the pipe cleaners were out all over our kitchen table.

We also have pine cones on our kitchen table, along with some acorns, and a vase of flowers. So, I started to play around with those items.
I encouraged my daughter to make one of her own, but she seemed perplexed at the idea of taking items and shaping them into a heart. I went to the computer to show her some of Page's hearts, and then suggested materials for her to work with. We took some pennies out of our change jar, and I ended up putting the pennies on her belly to make a heart, which brought about laughter.

I am in complete awe of all the creativity that exists in our world. All the ways we can express ourselves and our emotions. I find joy in these creative expressions and need to make more time for my own unique expressions.

  1. I just watched all the Beckoning of Lovely videos and had a good teary, grinning time. I think I'll make my sister a heart shaped cake for her Valentine's Day birthday. Don't tell. It's a surprise! And if she reads this blog then she'll get the joy of anticipation and receiving. And I'll get the joy of making, giving and smiling all the way to the kitchen.
